We’re seeking an experienced Structural Steel Welder/Fabricator to join a high-volume fabrication environment. You’ll handle fit-up, layout, and code-compliant welding of beams, columns, stairs, handrails, platforms, and miscellaneous metals.
Key Responsibilities
- Read and interpret shop drawings, welding symbols, and blueprints (imperial/metric).
- Perform fit-up, layout, and tack of structural members to tight tolerances.
- Weld using FCAW/GMAW (MIG) and SMAW (Stick) in flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead positions to AWS D1.1 / CWB standards.
- Fabricate components: cut, bevel, drill, cope, and prep using oxy-fuel/plasma, saws, ironworker, grinders.
- Verify dimensions; maintain quality with gauges, squares, levels, tapes.
- Follow WPS and complete welds to specification; assist with rework as needed.
- Rig, move, and position steel safely (basic rigging/overhead crane use).
- Keep a clean, organized work area; complete production and QC documentation.
- Adhere to all safety policies and wear required PPE.
Must-Have Qualifications
- 3–5+ years structural steel welding/fabrication experience (shop or field).
- Proficiency in FCAW/GMAW/SMAW and structural fit-up/layout.
- Strong blueprint reading and welding symbol knowledge.
- Able to weld in all positions and handle materials up to heavy sections.
- Solid understanding of AWS D1.1 / CSA W47.1 requirements.
Nice to Have
- Current CWB (CSA W47.1) tickets or AWS D1.1; employer can test/upgrade strong candidates.
- Forklift/Overhead Crane experience; basic rigging certification.
- Familiarity with NDT/VT inspection practices and completing QC forms.
- WHMIS, Working at Heights/Fall Protection (asset).
